Kathryn Mendenhall Hunt, age 93, died March 20, 2015. She was born in Winston-Salem, NC, September 2, 1921, to Sanford and Ollie Mendenhall. Kathryn was the widow of Allen Hunt, who preceded her in death in 2001 after being married 58 years. Her brother, Ed Mendenhall, also preceded her in death. Kathryn Mendenhall Hunt, age 93, died March 20, 2015. She was born in Winston-Salem, NC, September 2, 1921, to Sanford and Ollie Mendenhall. Kathryn was the widow of Allen Hunt, who preceded her in death in 2001 after being married 58 years. Her brother, Ed Mendenhall, also preceded her in death. Kathryn graduated from South High School in 1938 as Valedictorian of her class and a member of the National Honor Society. She attended Draughon Business College in Winston-Salem and married her long-time sweetheart in 1943 during World War II, a short time before his deployment to Africa and Italy.
During her working years in Winston-Salem, she was employed at IBM Sales Office as Office Manager; she was the first IBM female employee in N.C. She also worked at Hanes Knitting Co. During World War II, she worked at Seattle-Tacoma Shipbuilding Company, Tacoma, Washington, contributing her part to the war effort.
After moving to Raleigh in 1948, she was employed at N.C. Medical Care Commission and IBM, as well as various part-time positions while raising their two daughters.
Her life interests consisted mostly of raising and caring for her family and working in her yard and church. She was a faithful and active member of Hayes Barton United Methodist Church since 1952, and longtime member of the Wesleyan Fellowship Sunday School Class.
Family left to cherish her memory are her beloved two daughters, Jan Samuel and husband Jeff; Karen Maddry and husband Mike; dearly loved grandchildren Davidd Samuel and wife Anne-Marie; Jeffrey Maddry; Kristina Ritter and husband Andrew; Michael (Clint) Maddry and wife Jessica. Also surviving are step granddaughter, Raedene Averitt and husband Billy. Surviving great-grandchildren are Gregory Cich, Kinsley Ritter, Grayson, Nathaniel, and Ember Maddry. Surviving step grandchildren are Sawyer, Sadie and Skyleigh Averitt. Also surviving is a dear sister-in-law, Jane Mendenhall, of Winston-Salem along with many much loved nieces and nephews.
Memorial service will be held Wednesday, March 25 at Hayes Barton United Methodist Church at 1:00 pm.
Family will greet friends at the church immediately following the service. Private burial will be beside her beloved husband, Allen, at Raleigh Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifts be made to Hayes Barton United Methodist Church, 2209 Fairview Rd; Raleigh, NC 27608, or charity of choice.
